These are rarities. But what is far more common is the terrible way many students approach their classes and act in class. Typically on either a smartphone, a laptop, or a tablet/iPad. A lot of games being played on those devices, videos on TikTok, text messages/IG, in lecture/lab/recitation. Very few pens/pencils and paper out. Few read before or after, instead holding off until the week of the exam. Few check Canvas or Blackboard (or whatever LMS used) during the semester. Few check the academic calendar online; that is, if they even know it exists. Those are commonalities you folks don’t ever discuss or attempt to “call out”. 🤷🏻‍♂️

... I went to the birthday party of a friend of a friend's. I wound up going home early from what was supposed to be a sleepover when the bday girl found random drugs on the hobby lobby parking lot and everyone went into the bathroom with her when we got back to her house after she was treated to $500 at Hastings, but got everyone kicked out for stealing and breaking things when she was caught, by her parents and the store manager at the same time (she was being blatantly obvious and drawing attention to it as she did it, literally shouting out what she was stealing). She was a few years younger than I was, and her parents had gotten to the point of giving her anything she wanted so her behaviour wasn't //as// bad. Like, caving while I was getting my stuff together to get picked up, her mother was in tears, how terrified she was at whatever her daughter did, she was rushing to get to an alcohol store before they closed, considering it was a Saturday night. In my seniour year, she was arrested for murdering both of her parents and trapping her 2 younger siblings in the basement with no heat on and all the upstairs windows and the doors left wide open, just after a pretty bad snow storm (school was cancelled, and in my state, that takes a bit). She got the murder weapon from her bf, who was ten+ years older than her father (30's vs 16), and they were hunted across several states before they were caught... seeing her on the news while in my 2nd hour ceramics class was unsettling, to say the least.
